Hinge is the mainstream app we have most in common with, and the one we would send people to if they lived in a city.

That is an odd thing for a comparison page to open with, so here is why. Hinge is built around intent rather than volume. You like a specific photo or a specific answer rather than a whole person, and the whole thing is set up to end in a relationship. It is also the one big app growing while the others shrink.

We want the same outcome. The difference is not philosophy. It is who is in range when you open it.

We agree about the important part

Both sites think dating apps went wrong when they optimised for volume. Both think a smaller number of better conversations beats a big pile of matches nobody follows up. Neither of us is trying to keep you on the app forever.

Distance is the real difference

Hinge has publicly said it now nudges members towards more open minded filter settings, distance included, and explains how strict dealbreakers cut how many people you see. That is a fair description of the same problem we built the whole site around.

The difference is that on a general app widening your distance gets you more people who happen to be further away. On Grounded it gets you more people who are further away and already understand the drive, the hours and the dog.

The pool, honestly

Hinge has far more UK members than we do. We have around 38,000 across all our markets, 21,500 of them in the UK. We are not going to dress that up.

What we would ask you to compare is not the totals but what comes back at 50 miles from your postcode, and how many of those people you would have anything in common with. In a city Hinge wins that on both counts. Forty minutes out, it usually stops winning the second one.
